Emotional Eating - The 10 Most Powerful Emotions You Eat to Kill

Emotional eating is the practice of turning to food – consciously or unconsciously – to deal with feelings and emotions. These feelings may be with you most of the day. However, it is often only when the pace slows down, that you notice them. Not knowing how to handle these powerful emotions, eating follows.

Emotional eating occurs because something is going on in the inside. It may be stress, it may be boredom, or it may be tugging of your soul to change the direction of your life. Emotional eating is an attempt to fill a void, cope with stress, suppress uncomfortable emotions, or to create a state of numbness to difficult situations or feelings. Emotional eating can also be a way of avoiding thinking about problems that seem unsolvable.

The top ten reasons for emotional eating include:

1. Feeling disempowered to change your life
2. Feeling overwhelmed or trapped and not knowing how to move forward
3. Unresolved stress and anxiety
4. Perfectionist attitudes or fear of making mistakes or failing
5. Loneliness or Boredom
6. Having a sense of insecurity
7. Feeling undeserving of the abundance and pleasure life has to offer
8. Low self-esteem or poor self-image
9. Eating to hide an emptiness inside
10. A sense of feeling deprived caused by dieting or "being good" with food

Emotional eating occurs when a person believes that they are unable to deal with their situation. They not only feel a certain emotion, but they also believe themselves unable to effect change in their own lives. For example, a person may long for an improvement in his or her marriage, more success at work, or the ability to express himself or herself more creatively. However, because of low self-esteem, undeveloped self-leadership ability, ineffective stress management skills, or a lack of self-worth, they may be unable to see that they do actually have the ability to have what they want. Rather than stay with the terrible feelings of disempowerment, emotional eating makes it possible to shift attention to something else.

Identifying what triggers your emotional eating can be difficult. However, using the list above can help you become more aware of your personal triggers to emotional eating. The next time you reach for food, take a moment, and identify why you are eating. Once you become more aware about why you eat, you can start addressing old issues that keep you stuck.

How to Eliminate Acne - Things To Avoid

There are a number of actions that can worsen acne in anyone. In my experience I have discovered quite a few but that does not mean there are not others and it also does not mean that everything I list below will affect you in the same way. The only real way to identify your own personal stimulants is by paying close attention to what you eat and what you do. If you can, record your daily food intake so that when you have flare ups you can reference the records and see any links.

For a more comprehensive list and more detailed information I have created a complete guide available at from my website.

* MEDICATION

Some doctors will prescribe certain antibiotics to treat acne. The basis for this treatment is the concept that worse cases of acne usually imply a high susceptibility to infections. This concept is true. However, all people who have a low pH level are highly susceptible to infections and illness. And by using antibiotics, you are both ignoring the reason behind this vulnerability, and stopping your body from producing its own antibodies. You will then build a tolerance to antibiotics and require more when you are actually ill.

Also, some conditions require the use of anti-inflammatory medication. These can include prednisolone, salazopyrin, cortelone, etc. In general, most (if not all) anti-inflammatory medicine will aggravate infections, making what would be a minor passing infection into a major flare up. Your body frequently deals with minor infections with ease, but, unlike pH balance which simply allows infections to develop, taking anti-inflammatories will both cause and make these infections worsen.

Wherever possible, avoid this type of medication. Understandably, some conditions will require them and there is little or no alternative. During these periods, you will need to work extra hard on your pH balance. Eating 80% raw vegetables and cutting out junk food and red meat altogether is a necessity, and in some cases (depending on the strength of your dosage) it will still not be enough. The only way to be sure your acne is at its absolute minimum while on anti-inflammatories is by eating entirely raw vegetables and maintaining a pH of 7 or slightly higher.

* RED AND PROCESSED MEAT

Processed meats are overall entirely lacking nutritional value. Meat pies, hot dogs, frozen meats all go through an extensive preparation process which extracts the little nutritional value they have and also allow them to further 'decompose' making them even more acidifying than they already were. Even fresh meat is notorious for its negative effects on pH balance. It is a general fact that a dead animal will have an acidifying effect on your body. That is not to say that it is completely unhealthy. Meat will always have its benefits; protein, energy, some nutrients. But over-indulging in any type of meat is definitely not a healthy choice. In particular, red meats should be kept to an absolute minimum. White meats like poultry and seafood are better options as they are less acidifying and still provide the necessary proteins that a meat should.

Additionally, while there is no direct scientific evidence to link red meat to cancer, it is widely accepted by medical practitioners that red meat aggravates the bowels and can cause (or at the very least worsen) diseases that develop in the bowel. As the most important part of the digestive process, the bowels are responsible for extracting nutrients from the food you eat. Any damage done to either of the bowels will adversely effect your body's ability to digest food, even healthy food. This will, among other and more serious things, lead to a lower pH level.

* TOUCHING AFFECTED AREAS

Don't touch your pimples! I am sure you have all heard this one before but here is why you shouldn't. As mentioned in previous posts, acne on the skin is based bacteria and infection. Touching affected areas spreads bacteria and infection to the surrounding areas. Additionally, our hands come into contact with hundreds of different objects every day. Door handles, keyboards, tables, cars, floors, plants, etc. All of which hundreds of other people have touched and which have probably not been cleaned for many months (if ever). Bacteria and/or dirt cover the majority of these objects and until you wash your hands, you will spread both over anything you touch. So why touch an area that is bad enough to have acne and make it worse?

* JUNK FOOD

Generally, you will find that certain foods will aggravate your acne far more than others. For example, chocolates, ice cream, fried foods, oily foods, etc. Foods that are high in sugar and fat content have a strong acidic effect on your body's pH balance. And while your body can digest and dispose of small amounts of these kinds of food, you should avoid having them more than once or twice per week. For some of you, even that will be too much.

* OILY, DIRTY AND DEAD SKIN

Throughout the course of the day, your skin will both sweat, shed, and produce oil. On top of that, it will also collect any dirt from the air. You must avoid allowing this to build up. There are a few ways to maintain your skin. The first is to make sure you have a shower every day (twice a day is better but once is minimum). Always use an exfoliator (a facial scrub and loufa will do). If you exercise or play sport, always shower immediately afterwards - if no shower is available at the very least you should wash your face.

Sweat is one of the most efficient ways for your body to discharge toxins that have built up. This is why exercise will always help the fight against acne. However, if you allow the sweat to remain on the skin it will allow excessive growth of bacteria and collect even more dirt than usual. It is hard to say how sweat effects the buildup of oil because the moisture could be either. Despite that, the other factors should be enough to convince you to keep your skin as clean as possible.

Oh and one more thing. For those of you that do suffer from oily skin, the best treatment I found is to apply Himalayan Crystal Salt 2-3 times a day. It is 100% completely natural and does not damage the skin. Simply wet and apply. Easy.

So, Your Diet Failed Again?

Weight loss can be such an emotional event in one's life. Some days go so well and then other days are a complete mess. It is so easy to watch reality TV and see contestants on The Biggest Loser jump on the scale and drop 15 pounds in one week. Then you see them do it again week after week after week. This type of personal expectation can make the average person feel as if they are a failure when compared to the weekly results portrayed on your T.V. As you watch The Biggest Loser you must realize that in the one hour show there are up to almost forty two hours of exercise shoved into one episode. Most people that you know can not afford to devote that amount of time to sweating week after week and that is not an excuse, that is the reality.

As the average weight loss individual knows, in real life, you have your good days and your bad days. This internal rating system is often "tagged" to how much or how little is eaten. The issue that creeps into everyone's diet plan is an event called life. More often than not life can over take and cause setbacks in your weight loss goal. The setbacks can be attending a wedding (especially if it is your own wedding) or a death in the family. Your job may take you out of town on an unexpected trip or your work day may turn into an emotional roller coaster that sets you out on a mission to seek comfort in food.

All too often when the events in one's life become unbearable people tend to retreat into what some people may call an excuse. To a spectator who has never attempted to lose weight they may look at you as being lazy or simply as someone who just does not try hard enough. As one powers up their inner self for the journey to be thin they see expectations set by "diet plans" or T.V. shows or some wonderful exercise product. After seeing before and after photographs you get motivated and decide to lose those 75 pounds and this time it will work! Then you wake up three days later and you can't comprehend why your diet has not worked. Then you lose your resolve and hopelessness begins to settle in and you just keep on going through life with the nagging in your mind that you are still over weight.

Let me be the first to tell you that is does not have to be that way. Let me inform you that too many individuals set their weight loss goals unrealistically. This faulty goal may be what is setting you up to fail from the start. I want you to re-evaluate your goal and separate it into two parts. By dividing your one goal into two parts you will help ensure your success.

Goal: Lose Weight

Part One: How Much Weight Do You Want To Lose And How Long Will It Take?

The first thing you need to decide is how much weight do you want to lose. If you say to yourself "I want to lose 100 pounds" that is great, but a vital part of that statement is how long do you think it will take? I want you to take your goal and divide it by two. That answer would be a realistic, and sustainable weight loss when the number is attached to the time frame of pounds per week. If you want to lose 100 pounds then it should take you about one year. This is not only achievable but it will be sustainable, after you lose the weight. Set a realistic goal and that realism will help from life getting in the way of your ability to lose weight.

Part Two: What Food Will I Eat To Lose The Weight?

This is the difficult part of the equation. If you start a plan that only included eating seeds from the forest you more than likely will not be able to live the rest of your life eating seeds. This may sound like an extreme example but the point is that you must follow a plan that will allow you to survive long after you lose the desired weight. If you decide to end carbohydrate consumption you more than likely will one day break that diet and then break it again and then yet again and again. Then somewhere along the way, your diet is over and you ended up with more weight than you had before you started the diet.

So not only do you need to set a goal as to how much weight you want to lose, you need to plan on the food that you eat after you lose the weight. If you combine this approach with a realistic time frame that wedding will not be a problem. Two pounds a week eating food you will be able to survive on for years will be a lot better than some fad diet that will not last. Two pound weight loss every week is better than a one half pound weight gain per month.

Why Fruit Juice, Sweetened Water, Tea and Coffee do Not Count as Water - and Will Make You Fat!

I bet you've heard it said, or maybe even read in a reputable source that drinking anything containing water is just as good as the pure stuff.

The truth is, as with anything on the topic of weight loss, you're always going to find mixed messages when you go looking to popular media. Unfortunately, even spending your money or time with qualified nutritionists or weight loss experts can give you a conflicting info overload.

Which is why you need to keep reading my articles! I'll always do the research for you, I'll look at both sides of the story, and I'll make sure that you only get the cold, hard truth.

Even if it hurts.

So listen up. If you've read or otherwise heard that you can include coffee, tea, flavoured water (even sports drinks or vitamin water), and fruit juice as part of your daily water intake, then I'm going to have to burst your bubble.

Not only are these drinks not hydrating, they actually take water away from your body and can CAUSE YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT!

Here's how it works:

1. ANYTHING containing caffeine or sugar is toxic to your body. Your body wants it outta there - and fast!

2. This causes your body to take existing water stores and use them to flush out any sugar/caffeine/synthetic vitamins. Yes, this does include unsweetened fruit juice. I know it's natural, and no, it's not toxic, but it will still spike your blood sugar.

3. Where do these existing water stores come from? Well, the fastest way to get water is from your muscles.

4. This makes your muscles less than functional, leading to lowered performance and a sluggish metabolism (at least for the short term)

5. If you drink these beverages daily, your body is continually battling to stay hydrated, and your metabolism is always under attack.

But wait, there's more. And it ain't great.

Drinks with sugar added: sugar causes insulin to be released into your blood stream. One job of insulin is to store fat!

Caffeinated pick-me-ups: Caffeine stimulates your Sympathetic Nervous System, causing an excess release of cortisol and adrenalin. These are stress hormones whose is also - can you guess? Yep, to store fat.

How To Stay Hydrated and Stop Gaining Weight From So-called Innocent Drinks

Pretty simple, really. In a perfect world, I'd ask you to drink only water and herbal tea. But in reality, that's not even what I ask of myself! What I will suggest is that you drink enough pure water to start with (see my article 'Secret #2: How I Dropped Five Pounds in two Days - The Sure-Fire Back-up Plan). Next, what you need to do is replace every sweetened or caffeinated beverage with an additional TWO glasses of pure water. Yes, TWO.

Finally, if you're drinking more than three (total) of these drinks, seriously consider cutting down. I'd suggest two per day, max, and preferably before lunch. This gives your metabolism and hormonal system time to normalise before bedtime, ensuring you'll recover and burn fat during the night, rather than store it.

Happy drinking!

Adult Acne In Women - What Is It And What Can I Do?

Why do some women get acne in middle age? It is not clearing understood. Hormonal changes caused by menstruation and menopause might make some women more susceptible to acne.

Did you know that acne is generally blamed on an excess of male hormones known as androgens? These stimulate the sebaceous glands in the dermis to product oily, waxy sebum. Too much sebum can lead to blocked pores and fast grown of bacteria on the skin. The symptoms of adult acne are:

• Whiteheads: closed and plugged oil glands

• Blackheads: open and plugged oil glands

• Pustules: swollen red bumps, often filled with pus

When associated with the menstrual cycle, women usually get pimples or blackheads a few days before the start of the period. The problem typically goes away with menopause, but may fluctuate during the transition. So if you have had this problem, this is something good that comes with aging!

Fluctuating hormones can be the problem. Doctors do not really understand what causes acne; they do know that increased androgens are a factor. During menopause, you do experience a change in the estrogen-androgen ratio. In studies, women with acne have higher levels of androgens than women with no acne. Likewise, women who had acne as teens often get it again at midlife.

Other possible causes can be medications, greasy or allergic makeup and even bacteria on the face caused by resting the hands on it. Chocolate, fried foods and dirty skin do not cause acne, according to the current research. When I was a teen, food was blamed for acne. Today, that is known to be a myth. Stress does not cause acne, but it can agitate it, so if you have acne, try and relax more. (Actually that can help everyone!)

As you age, your skin becomes drier, so you have to handle acne differently than you did as a teen. Don't slather on products like you once did. Only put it on the spot you are treating. You need products make specifically for adults. If this does not help you get relief, see a dermatologist for antibiotics or other prescription medication.

It has been determined that for some women, oral contraceptives and hormone therapy may be beneficial. Much of the debate over hormone therapy centers on risks of cancer or heart attack. But for many women, they say that estrogen makes them look and feel younger. Hormones do not change the effects of genetic aging, sun exposure damage, or damage caused by smoking. Clinical testing has determined that hormones seem to limit collagen loss, help the skin to improve firmness and elasticity and decrease the depth of wrinkles and pore size. The researcher do not have enough prove to recommend estrogen replacement for skin care alone, and it is not FDA-approved for this, but if you wish to try it, talk to your doctor about how it could benefit you.

What Is Your Best Breast Cancer Treatment Option?

Treating an ailment has become very easy in the 21st Century, with dozens of options available for every disease varying with every symptom. The same goes for breast cancer, and people suffering from it can opt for various therapies ranging from surgery to laser therapy.

Meant for a certain area like the breast or lymph nodes, instead of the entire body, diagnosis of breast cancer is normally done by some form of surgery like a biopsy. When it is discovered there are two types of surgery that can be performed. One is the mastectomy where the entire breast is removed, and the other is a partial mastectomy, where only part of the breast is removed. These two options are considered effective for women with breast cancer that is not that big in diameter. For women with a single tumor larger, partial mastectomy may still be an idea if chemotherapy is able to shrink the cancer enough before surgery.

Systemic therapy is good in order to get rid of any cells that may have spread to other parts of the body. If the cancer has spread and has formed tumors elsewhere this treatment can help shrink the cancer and hopefully lead to a remission, which would be ideal for everyone.

This treatment is mainly decided by the characteristics of the cancer. The more aggressive the cancer is then it will have a higher risk of spreading outside that area and into other areas where treatment can be harder to do.

Therapies are taken by either a pill or even sometimes by injection. Chemotherapy can be administered by either way and is used to destroy cancer cells that it finds. Immune therapy is widely unknown and not used as much as the other therapies just because it is new. It works the same way that getting a flu shot works, it makes the body think that something is attacking it, so that it was use its defense systems which are the while blood cells to fight the infection, or whatever the problem may be.

Many people are turning to what is known as Complementary therapy. The principle behind Complementary therapy is that it restores the body's natural health so that the body becomes capable of fighting infections on its own. Complementary therapies include yoga, massages, chiropractic, herbal remedies' intake and acupuncture. People who have tried this therapy are more than just satisfied by the results, and they can reaffirm that it makes them feel a lot better while they're surviving the disease. There is absolutely nothing to lose by trying this therapy, only a chance to feel better and healthier.

The Obseity Epidemic - Do You Want You Family To Be Fat Or Fit?

You would have to have been living under a rock for the past 10 years to not know Australia has a weight problem. You may be overweight yourself, or a member of your household, in fact your child may even be overweight.

The incidence of obesity in Australia is growing at a shocking rate. In a Medical Journal of Australia study in 2000, it was found that of over 11,000 people who had their measurements taken, 60% of them were overweight or obese. That's a lot of fat people.

Why is it so?

There are only two reasons why a person is overweight.

1.) They eat too much.

2.) They move too little.

The worst thing you can do is kid yourself that you have extenuating circumstances, and that neither of the above applies to you.

This is a serious matter. Fat can make your life miserable, lonely and painful. It can leave you feeling unfulfilled, and it can kill you.

Between 1981 and 2000, the incidence of diabetes doubled in Australia - that's incredible.

Our children are fat too. Currently, the most prevalent health issues affecting our children are all preventable - think about that one. They include obesity, dental disease, and emotional and behavioural problems.

Nearly 25% of children are overweight or obese with the rate rising 1% per year. By 2025, half our children will be overweight.

Why are children so fat? The same two reasons adults are. They eat too much, and they don't exercise enough. It's time to be blunt, if you're child is fat, it's most probably your fault. Children do not have access to money unless you give it to them. They do not have access to junk food - unless you give it to them.

Our modern lifestyle

The reasons why we move so little and eat so many calories are many, too many to discuss here. They include our modern sedentary lifestyle of sitting at a desk all day, getting in the car and driving home only to sit in front of the tv before we go to bed.

The Medical Journal of Australia study found a strong correlation between the number of hours spent watching tv and the rate of obesity. It was thought this may be because watching television fosters mindless and continual eating, and sparks cravings for junk food.

We have energy saving devices like remote television controls and garage doors, sometimes in the same house as treadmills and weights??

We do not see where our food comes from, and therefore we do not know what is in it. We live in a society where food is sold not only in restaurants and supermarkets but also; train stations, football games, movie theatres, even outside hardware stores.

We are bombarded with it on television, billboards in glossy magazines and junk mail. Food is big business and the cheaper it can be produced, the larger the profit margin for the companies selling it, and the poorer quality of food we are sold.

What can we do?

There is some good news, however. The Medical Journal of Australia also states that, "Maternal education is the strongest social determinant of overweight and obesity in children." In other words, mothers, and parents, have the power to make their children either healthy, happy and active, or fat and miserable.

Most importantly, parents need to lead by example. If your child sees you tucking into a packet of Tim Tams with no restraint, how will they fathom a different set of rules for themselves?

Before we talk about weight loss and what you can do to get your family back on the straight and narrow, let's talk about junk food.

What is junk food? By definition 'junk food' is food that tastes good, but is high in fat (sugar and chemicals) and has little or no nutritional value.

One of the best tips I have ever heard to jump start a healthy diet is to not eat food if you can't tell what it is made from just by looking at it. Fruit is fruit, but what do you think would be in a jar of that marshmallow stuff you spread on toast, or a Chicken-in-a-biscuit, or French onion dip?

Read the label on these highly processed foods and you will see they are packed with saturated fat, than smothered with either sugar or salty tasting msg.

Here are some tips for making your family fit, not fat.

  1. Don't keep junk food in the house. Think about what you are putting in your trolley.

  2. If you consider takeaway food to be a treat, have it very occasionally - once every couple of months.

  3. Be prepared to cook. This is the only way you will know what you're eating. You can actually buy cookbooks which have recipes that are very fast to prepare.

  4. Play games outside with your children. The benefits won't be just physical.

  5. Don't reward your children with food.

  6. Don't make food such a big deal in the family. Food is fuel, not a hobby.

  7. Grow your own pot of tomatoes or lettuce, so your children can see where their food comes from.

  8. Turn off the television. You'll be surprised and alarmed at what a loose end the family is at without the mindless sound of television in the background. This won't last for long though.

  9. Pack your children's lunches. Lunch money at the average tuckshop will be too much of a temptation for them.

  10. Read labels. If you can't understand what is in a product put it down. Invest in a pocket sized food additives book, now available at many supermarkets. Find out what is really in the food you're eating, and do some work on the web to find out what possible affects these additives could have. You might find you don't want them in your system.

Breast Cancer 101 - Risk Factors And Alternative Cure

Breast cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases among women. It plays second fiddle only to lung cancer as the top killer of women in the United States and the rest of the world. And since the 1970s, recorded cases of the disease have continuously increased at an alarming rate. Breast cancer can also happen to men, albeit rarely; around 12,000 American men contract this disease every year.

Despite the nasty reputation of breast cancer, doctors have yet to find out the real causes of the disease. Right now, experts believe that cancer cells in the breasts develop as a result of a combination of risk factors. Nonetheless, doctors are sure that bumping or accidentally hurting your breasts can not trigger cancer.

Many studies confirm that certain elements may put a woman in an increased susceptibility to breast cancer. Women with one or all of these risk elements may be more imperiled than other women who are free from such factors. Here are the determinants of breast cancer to watch out for.

Age

Your likelihood of having this type of disease increases as you become older. Statistically speaking, most breast cancer patients are women who are at least in their 60s. In fact before the menopausal stage, this disease may be considered extraordinary even for women.

Personal And Family History

If one of your breasts has cancer or if you had breast cancer before, your risk of having cancer on your other breast is greatly increased. In fact, the likelihood of having breast cancer under these circumstances may have quadrupled.

In the same manner, if someone in your family has been afflicted with this disease, you may be more prone to getting breast cancer. If your mother, your sister or even your child has been stricken down with this disease, you have to be careful because your risk can be higher than other women. Heredity plays a significant role in the development of this type of cancer.

Habits And Lifestyle

If you do not have close relatives who suffered from breast cancer, it does not mean that you are guaranteed to be free from getting the disease. Your habits and lifestyle can also contribute to the occurrence of cancer cells in your breasts. Women who smoke and are addicted to alcohol, for instance, have increased chances of suffering the disease. Obesity and use of contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy can also support the growth of cancerous tissues in the breasts.

Ways To Deal With Cancer

So far, mainstream cancer therapeutic procedures like chemotherapy and hormone therapy are the best steps that women with breast cancer should take. This is not to say that there are too few anti-cancer cures available; quite on the contrary, women who suffer from the disease have more medical options today than two or three decades ago.

However, there are some alternative measures that can complement regular breast cancer medication. Foremost among these measures is detoxification. Naturopaths or people who treat diseases by using natural remedies believe that the way to a healthier and cancer-free life is by eating healthy and living right.

This philosophy is not without basis. Practitioners of alternative medicine stress that the human body is not equipped to fight foreign substances brought about by pollution, chemicals and other environmental elements. Because of this, harmful substances are stored by the body and, over time, a buildup of toxins inside cells and tissues occurs.

These toxic substances are the ones responsible for the many diseases that happen today, which includes breast cancer. Cleansing the body of these poisonous substances can greatly help in preventing the growth of cancer cells in the breasts. Nevertheless, you have to think of these methods as supportive or additional steps in the fight against the disease; breast cancer patients still need help from doctors and drug medication.

Setting Goals for Weight Loss

Losing weight is a lot like rock climbing, For some it might be like conquering Everest, for others it's more like climbing the foothills. But it's never a walk in the woods. Let's take a look now at the size of the rock you'll be climbing and then set some goals, How far is the summit, and do you want to reach it? How fast will you climb? Will you do it in stages? What aids will you use? Will you do it alone or with a team?

Observe yourself

Before you can begin to set goals, you need to take a long hard look at where you are now. Keeping a food and activity diary is the best way to do this. If you look at the times of day or moods you're in when you exercise and eat, you may even get ideas about substituting one for the other. (Guess which one?)

It may seem like a bother, but keeping a diary will force you to see where your problem lie. Do yourself a favor and do it for a week. This diary is for you and you alone. No one else will read it.

When keeping your food diary you must promise to be honest with yourself.

Your diary should be kept in your weight-loss notebook, but if the notebook is too big to carry around, slip some index cards in your pocket or purse to note what you eat and how long you do what kind of exercise when you're away from home. You can enter this data in your notebook at the end of the day.

Your food diary

This will be an important tool for the eating side of your weight-loss plan. The food diary will show you, in black and white, why you are overweight and what eating and behavior habits you need to change. You may be surprised how much food you consume in a typical day.

You may notice that certain moods, people, or circumstances accompany pig-outs.

You may spot dangerous times of day or a pattern of increased eating as the day progresses. Weekends may be perilous, or maybe business lunches are your undoing.

You will need to fill in the number of calories of everything you eat. If what you eat comes in a package, you can get this information from the label. (Remember: 10 cookies is not a serving!) Otherwise, use a calorie-counting book or one of the online calorie counters.

Don't get hung up on details. If aren't sure about quantities, estimate. But estimate on the high side.

A sample food diary can be found on the next page. Set up something similar in your weight-loss notebook, so that you have a food diary for each day of the week. On the page for the last day of the week, make a space for your weekly calorie total.

Set aside a column or space each day for comments. Use this space to write anything that will help you understand what was going on when you ate, including triggers or moods, anything about the occasion or people you were with, feelings of guilt or triumph you experienced before, during, or afterward.

As part of your food diary, record how many glasses of water you drink. Aim for a minimum of eight glasses or 64 ounces of water each day.

It's important to keep track of how much water you drink to remind you to drink a lot of it. Monitor your water consumption by making a check mark for each 8-ounce glass you drink. It's easiest if you measure out your water in advance, but if you drink from a water fountain, for example, you can figure two swallows per ounce.
