Breast cancer awareness has rapidly increased in the past years. In its simplest terms, breast cancer is caused by cells that have grown uncontrollably. Some genes control cell growth. If these genes become abnormal or are damaged, then cancer cells develop. Breast cancer may be confined in specific parts of the breast, or it may spread and affect more tissues and even the other body organs.

The most common types of breast cancer are those that develop in the lobules (lobular) or ducts (ductal). Lobules are the glands that produce milk. Ducts are the tubes connecting lobules to the nipple, where milk shall pass through. When cancer is confined to the point or place where it first developed, cancer is said to be at Stage 0 or non-invasive. If cancer is of the invasive type, it means that it has moved beyond the walls and has affected surrounding tissue.

There are many symptoms of breast cancer, but remember that not all lumps or tumors are malignant. Conversely, what would appear as a harmless rash may be a symptom of inflammatory breast cancer. A woman should know how her breast looks. As soon as she sees any changes in appearance whatsoever, she must consult a doctor soon. Symptoms include lumps, mass, swelling, discoloration, or distortion in shape of the breast as well as dimpling of the skin. Inverted nipple and nipple discharges are also symptoms of breast cancer.

There are ways to detect breast cancer. One is through self-examination. This is done monthly, after menstruation. Check for lumps in the breast and in areas surrounding it. Your doctor may schedule you for regular mammogram screening tests. Still other methods include MRI scanning and breast ultrasound.

Early detection is the solution for breast cancer cure. The earlier the cancer is detected, the more curable it is and the higher the survival rates. Cancer stages may be described as early, later or advanced. Early stages include Stages 0 - IIA, later stages include Stages IIB and III and advanced stage is Stage IV. The stage determines the size of the tumor as well as the involvement of other tissues, lymph nodes and other body parts. Cancer may also be described using the letters T, N and M. T refers to the tumor size. N describes lymph node involvement. M determines if there is cancer metastasis, or if the cancer has moved and infected other bodily organs.

There are different treatments available. Mastectomy involves the removal of the entire breast and this is performed if cancer is still in its early stage. Lumpectomy is a partial mastectomy, when only a part of the breast is removed. Cancer cells are removed in order to avoid them spreading. Radiation then follows surgery. Hormonal therapy can also be given. The goal is to reduce estrogen or its effects. When estrogen levels in the body are high, cancer cells grow and multiply, so estrogen is blocked with this treatment. But in order for this treatment to apply, the cancer must be hormone-receptive-positive. Another treatment is chemotherapy. For this treatment, cells are hindered from reproducing. But because this therapy is systemic, or it involves the entire body, cells of other body parts are likewise affected. This explains why chemotherapy has side effects, among them nausea and hair loss.

The key to breast cancer cure is early detection. The longer it takes for a patient to know, the harder the cancer is to treat. To detect the illness, conducting a personal check is the fastest and easiest way. In fact, self-examination has led to the detection of nearly ninety-five percent of breast cancer cases. That is why it is important for every woman, regardless of age, to know how to do a breast cancer personal check.

When to Start

Any woman from age 20 up should know how to do a monthly personal check. It is at this age when one should start. From then on, aside from self-examination, it is advised that clinical breast exams be conducted every three years until one reaches the age of 40. At age 40 up, mammogram and clinical breast exam must be conducted yearly. For those aged 50 and above, you should have routine breast screening.

Self-examination must be done a week after menstrual period. This is because it is during this time when your breasts are no longer swollen and have returned to their usual form. After menopause, examine yourself at the same time or day every month, for consistency. If pregnant or nursing, consult your doctor, as self-examination is not feasible with your breasts feeling tender and lumpy.

How to do a Personal Check

There are two points in a breast self-exam: knowing how your breasts look and how they feel, known as breast familiarity.

Look. The first part of a breast self-exam is by checking the appearance of your breasts. With hands placed on your hips, stand before a mirror and look closely at both breasts. Some points to note:
- Breasts must be free from any redness, swelling or rash, or any dimpling or puckering of the skin. Both breasts must be their usual size, contour and color. It is not necessary, though, that both be perfectly symmetrical.
- Nipples must not be inverted or have not turned in.
- When nipples are gently squeezed, there must be no discharge, whether blood or fluid.

Then raise both arms above your head place your hands together. Check for the same changes as discussed above.

Feel. This is performed while lying down or while standing/sitting.

Lie down in a flat surface, with a pillow under your shoulder. Examine one breast at a time. With your right hand, inspect the left breast by first placing your left hand at the back of your head. With three big fingers flat, press them firmly at your left breast in a slow, circling motion. There may be three patterns to follow, all to ensure that you cover the whole breast - from collarbone to the ribcage and from armpit to cleavage. The three patterns are clock, wedge and sweeping technique. The clock pattern is done by moving your fingers around the nipple in a clockwise manner, from the outer edge moving in smaller circles towards the nipple. With the wedge pattern, you mentally divide your breast into wedges, like pie slices. You then work on each slice from the outer part moving in towards the nipple. With the sweeping technique, you move your fingers vertically up and down. The same procedure goes for the right breast. Check for any lumps or thickening. Follow the same pattern for each monthly exam.

Stand or sit straight, and examine each breast with one hand at the back of your shoulder and using the same pattern as when you were lying down. Some prefer to do this exam while in the shower, where skin is slippery.

Some personal checks may be incorrectly done. It is best to ask your doctor to evaluate your method of self-examination in order to gain maximum benefit from it.

Performing a breast cancer personal check regularly will increase breast familiarity. If you are familiar with your breasts, it will be easy for you to detect changes. And as soon as you see any changes, consult a doctor. After all, self-examination alone is not a fool-proof guarantee that all tumors are detected. Medical experts insist that a combination of breast cancer screening methods be conducted. Aside from self-examination, one may undergo a clinical breast exam, mammography, or, for a few women, magnetic resonance imaging. Whichever way it is, what is important is for breast cancer to be detected at its early stage, when it still can be treated.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Eat a healthy diet. Exercise regularly. Limit alcohol intake. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, there is a lesser chance for you to gain weight. And obesity, especially among menopausal women, increases the risk of breast cancer. This is because excess fat causes an increase in estrogen levels. And more exposure to estrogen in a woman's lifetime is linked to breast cancer.

Free radicals are chemicals that attack proteins and DNA. When segments of the DNA are damaged, specifically those that control cell growth, cancer cells can develop. Diets that are high in fiber and low in fat decrease the formation of free radicals, and, subsequently, reduce the risk. Regular intake of anti-oxidants and vitamins such as Vitamins E and C also reduce the risk of getting it.

It is recommended that one should engage in regular physical activity as this helps in maintaining weight as well as gives hormonal balance, both of which can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Exercise need not be intense or for long periods of time. At least 30 minutes to an hour should be devoted to exercise.

High alcohol consumption is considered a breast cancer risk factor. There is therefore the need to limit alcohol intake regardless of the type and alcohol content of the beverage consumed. It is recommended that alcohol be limited to not more than one drink a day or preferably completely avoided.

Chemoprevention

To reduce the risk, one may use drugs and this is called chemoprevention. For breast cancer prevention, a chemical called selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) is used.

Breast cancer cells need estrogen in order to grow. These cells have receptors that bind estrogen. What an SERM does is to block estrogen absorption in the receptors by occupying it, causing the cancer cells to stop its growth. There are two SERMs available.

The first drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for breast cancer treatment is used for both early and advanced stages of breast cancer. It is also proven to decrease lumps and cysts. However, there are side effects to this drug, among them, increased uterine cancer risk, weight gain, vaginal discharges and others.

There is another approved drug to prevent osteoporosis in most post-menopausal women and studies show that it can reduce the risk of breast cancer. What makes this drug better is that ,unlike the former, it does not increase uterine cancer risk.

These drugs must be taken with caution and doctor's approval. One should also read more information about the drugs, its side effects, and results of the studies made on it, especially regarding the effectiveness and safety of these drugs.

Prophylactic surgery

Prophylactic or preventive mastectomy is the surgical removal of the breast or both breasts. This may be done if a woman has a moderate to high risk. Studies show that it can reduce the risk by 90%. However, not all breast tissues may be removed after surgery, so there is still the risk that cancer will develop in these tissues.

Prophylactic oophorectomy also reduces the risk of breast cancer as well as ovarian cancers. In this procedure, the ovaries are removed by surgery.

But before any woman considers any of these, it is important that this be discussed carefully with the doctor. A second opinion may also be helpful.

These are some of the strategies to breast cancer prevention. The key is in knowing the risk factors and working to reduce or avoid those, but there is no guarantee that one may never get breast cancer and that is why regular breast examination and mammograms are advised. While breast cancer may not be totally avoided or prevented, it can be treated and cured if discovered at its early stage.

Moving On After Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects everyone in different ways and depending on the severity of each case, the recovery period varies greatly.

Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease and some very good work is being done to raise awareness and explore preventative measures. Unfortunately, there is still a downside.

This is the fact that these two words strike fear into the hearts of most women. We all know that it is these dreaded words that sets the alarm bells ringing. The psychological aspect of this means that when a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer her stress levels skyrocket, putting an extra load on the body when she can cope with it the least.

It is of course her attitude towards these words that could be the greatest influence in her recovery.

Having survived cancer myself, I feel that some of the healing process is in part how you view the disease itself. As anyone who's read any of my previous articles will know, I did make considerable lifestyle changes to facilitate recovery. I'm also convinced that a big part of the process was down to the attitude I adopted towards cancer.

I had great faith in my surgeon and after the operation when he told me he had removed the cancer I believed him; totally. However, I also understood that the surgeon had done his part, now it was down to me to make sure the cancer didn't come back.

During the recuperation period there is plenty of time to think. It was during this time, that I was able to work out what I think was the cause of my breast cancer. It is a good time to find a strategy for post-breast cancer lifestyle. I had several challenges on a personal level; self-confidence being one of the issues. So I bought several books on the subject that were a real help in getting me back on track.

I've never liked the word remission, because it always seems to me that when someone says they are in remission, it is as if they expect the cancer to come back. The Law of attraction states that you will attract what you think about the most. If you spend your time expecting the cancer to come back, the odds are pretty good that it will. Of course I have absolutely no medical qualifications, and I don't profess to know the answers, I can only say what has worked for me.

I've always believed that stress caused my breast cancer, and part of the changes I've made to ensure the cancer didn't return was to eliminate as much stress from my life as I could.

For my part, I felt the best thing was to move on as soon as possible. So after a few mammograms and checkups that put me in the clear, I cut all ties with the breast cancer episode and got on with my life. I don't think about it very often, and I'm inclined to treat it as just another surgical procedure. It was a necessary procedure such as my appendectomy, but by not giving it too much credence, it means my breast cancer remains low on my list of things to think about.

Overcoming breast cancer is not easy, but advances in medical science help surgeons work miracles. Then it's down to the individual to decide what part their attitude can play in effecting a lasting cure.

My last piece of advice would have to be, set your self up to enjoy life. You know what they say, this isn't a dress rehearsal. This is it the real thing. Enjoy it now.

To Lose Weight How Many Calories Do I Need To Burn - Wan Wan Wan!

I can't stand it any time I hear this question: "how many calories do i need to burn?" Now I suppose I could do the proper thing when asked this question and be like the hundreds of other ridiculous weight loss sites, programs, and supposed experts that are on the net and tell you that the answer to the question how many calories do I need to burn is Five Hundred a day! You see you need to either eat 500 calories less per day or work out enough that you burn at least 500 calories a day in order to lose the 1-2 pounds! Wan Wan Wan!

But being proper is never one of my finer points!! I mean come on?? What is that information going to do for you?? Who in their right mind thinks that they are going to count calories either consumed or burned for the rest of their life? Instead adapt this as your mindset and you will see much better results with your weight for life!

Ok, so most people know that they require a certain amount of calories for their body to function throughout correctly. If you are active or performing other more strenuous tasks throughout the day you require even more. I recommend thinking of the calories you need for energy like money you have in your pocket. Everyone has a total calorie "budget" and with any budget, you should divide it into "necessities" and "extras."

With your financial budget, necessities would be things such as your mortgage and groceries. The extras would be like vacations, going out to eat, new shoes, etc. In a calorie budget, necessities are the minimum calories required to meet your nutrient needs. The nutrients found in foods are the essential components we need to sustain life, grow and be active. Healthy eating is often misinterpreted with drastically cutting calories or going on unbalanced, crash diets. Which typically originates by the way with that hated question of how many calories do I need to burn!

By selecting the lowest fat and no sugar added foods you make the best nutrient buys. Why waste extra calories in full fat or full sugar foods when the healthier options taste just as good? When considering what to eat in the run of a day don't ask yourself how many calories do I need to burn, instead think along the lines that you want your "biggest bang for your buck." Depending on the foods you choose, you may be able to burn more calories than the amount required to meet your nutrient needs. These calories are the "extras" that can be used on luxuries like solid fats, added sugars and alcohol. They are your discretionary calories. If you have been good all week and eaten clean meals...there may be some room once in a while for you to have a small indulgence. It's when our calorie account is always overdrawn with extra calories, that doesn't allow you those treats, because you simply continue to store more calories, in turn more fat.

When asking the question how many calories do I need to burn, the best rule to go by is the 80/20 rule which applies in 2 different ways. The first is that 80% is what you eat and 20 % what you do, that is the deciding factor whether or not you reach your weight loss goal, much easier then asking how many calories do i need to burn. The other rule that applies when asking yourself how many calories do i need to burn is 80 % of the time you should eat to fuel your body, 20 % is sufficient for enjoying the junk foods. With that in mind make educated choices on what you put into your body. Every time you eat something, say to yourself am I eating for fuel or for pleasure? Take pride in your educated choices and pass your health knowledge along to the people you care about, it's all about knowledge, so teach someone something today! Explain to them that the question is not how many calories do I need to burn but how many do I need to function through out the day and lead a healthy life.
